Our Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site
found a traditional, back-to-nature campsite offering a secluded escape deep within the South Downs National Park. Set inside dense ancient woodland, the site provides a peaceful environment for visitors looking to switch off. Walking trails begin directly from the campsite. Its rustic character is part of its appeal. However, it does mean sacrificing some modern comforts and navigating a few practical layout challenges.
During our stay, the deep woodland setting delivered excellent privacy. However, the lack of digital connectivity and the low-pressure utility blocks kept the experience strictly functional. It is a well-managed base for hikers and dog owners. Anyone expecting a polished resort or high-end infrastructure may find it too unrefined.
From the shaded surroundings to the basic layout, Graffham delivers a peaceful, no-frills outdoor experience. It works well if you are prepared for a traditional camping trip.
Location
Located near Petworth in West Sussex, Graffham offers an incredibly secluded setting in the heart of the South Downs National Park.
The site is surrounded by ancient trees and rhododendron bushes. This creates a feeling of being completely cut off from the outside world. While this is fantastic for tranquillity, local amenities are some distance away. The nearest village shop and The Foresters pub are around a 20 to 25-minute walk along country lanes. Graffham works perfectly as a base for walking the South Downs Way. It is less practical if you want quick access to shops or nearby attractions without driving.
Whether you want to spend your days hiking through the forest or simply disconnect beneath the tree canopy, Graffham provides a rustic setting that favours solitude over convenience.
Facilities
The facilities at Graffham are clean but noticeably basic compared with many newer Camping and Caravanning Club sites.
The central shower and toilet block is older. During busy periods, the limited number of cubicles can lead to short waits. The water is hot, but the shower pressure leaves a lot to be desired. Overall, the facilities feel more like traditional campsite washrooms than modern amenities.
A major drawback is the lack of mobile phone reception or usable Wi-Fi across most of the site. If you need a signal, you must walk towards reception. On the positive side, the site staff are exceptionally welcoming. There is also a small shop at reception selling essential supplies. There are no on-site bars, restaurants or motorhome waste disposal points. Visitors must rely on their own facilities or nearby village businesses.
The wardens do an excellent job maintaining the site. However, the dated infrastructure and weak utility pressure prevent the facilities from feeling premium.
Cleanliness
Cleanliness is one area where the site team performs exceptionally well.
Despite the older facilities and the muddy conditions often found in woodland settings, every communal area remained tidy throughout our stay. The toilets, wash basins and dishwashing areas were cleaned regularly and presented with obvious care.
The attention to detail shown by the wardens keeps the site feeling fresh. As a result, the older infrastructure never feels neglected or unhygienic.
Pitch Quality
The pitches provide excellent privacy but come with several practical challenges.
Pitches are arranged in small clearings among the trees. This creates a wonderful sense of space between neighbouring units. However, the ground is often uneven and bumpy. You will almost certainly need levelling ramps.
The dense tree canopy leaves most pitches heavily shaded. As a result, they receive little direct sunlight and can stay damp after rain. The single-track access road is also heavily potholed. It requires a slow and careful approach to avoid unnecessary jolts when towing.
The privacy is excellent. However, the rough terrain and constant shade reduce overall comfort.
Value for Money
Graffham offers reasonable value, provided you know exactly what you are paying for.
The pricing matches standard Camping and Caravanning Club rates. That feels fair if your priority is camping in beautiful woodland with direct access to walking routes. However, similarly priced sites often provide more modern facilities, stronger showers and reliable digital connectivity. Because of this, Graffham feels slightly expensive for the standard of infrastructure provided.
It represents fair value for an authentic woodland escape. Those looking for modern campsite facilities may feel disappointed.
Final Verdict
Graffham is a peaceful woodland campsite that delivers a classic camping experience. However, it falls short when compared with more modern sites.
The quiet surroundings and private woodland pitches are the biggest highlights. They make Graffham an excellent choice for walkers and dog owners exploring the South Downs National Park. The wardens also deserve praise for maintaining high standards throughout the site.
However, the dated toilet blocks, weak shower pressure, potholed access road and complete lack of mobile signal will not suit every visitor.
We would recommend Graffham to anyone looking for a quiet woodland retreat with a traditional camping atmosphere. Caravanners seeking modern facilities, reliable connectivity and level sunny pitches may prefer to look elsewhere.

The pricing is fair for a quiet, back-to-nature base, but it feels slightly high considering you are paying standard club rates for dated facilities and an off-grid experience.
