Auto-Trail Motorhomes: Ranges, History and Buying Guide

Auto-Trail motorhomes have been built in Grimsby since 1982. This guide covers every current range, the new Adventure, the warranty and what to check on a used one.

About Auto-Trail

Auto-Trail motorhomes are among the best-known British coachbuilts. Bill Boasman and Barry Holmes founded the company in 1982. Its first coachbuilt was the Cheyenne, on a Peugeot 504.

Today, Auto-Trail builds every vehicle at its factory on the Europarc site in Grimsby. Since 1999, it has been part of the Trigano group.

The range now runs from compact campervans to the luxury Grande Frontier A-class. In addition, the all-new Adventure overcab range launched at the NEC in October 2026.

How Auto-Trail Motorhomes Are Built

Auto-Trail builds its motorhomes in Grimsby, using what it calls Cube construction. As a result, it says this gives less noise on the road and a more luxurious finish.

Also, the range covers the Excel, new for 2026, and the Grande Frontier GF-80. That A-class has its cab built into the body, with leather seats and electric blinds.

The New Adventure Range

The Adventure is Auto-Trail’s biggest launch for 2027. It’s an overcab coachbuilt on a Peugeot Boxer, with a new bodyshell and a redesigned GRP overcab. There are four layouts. The 64 has an end washroom, the 74 an island bed and the 76 a rear lounge. Finally, the 76G puts a bed over a garage. All four have four travel seats, so they suit families.

The Auto-Trail Warranty

Auto-Trail offers two- and five-year warranties. Dealers describe a five-year conversion warranty and a five-year body construction integrity warranty on recent models.

Back in 2011, Auto-Trail offered a ten-year water ingress warranty on its 2012 models. So older vans may have different terms. Always check the handbook and service book for the exact model.

Is an Auto-Trail Motorhome Right for You?

With campervans, coachbuilts and an A-class, Auto-Trail covers most types of tourer. So start with how you like to travel.

  • New to touring? Then an Expedition campervan is easy to drive and park.
  • Touring as a couple? In that case, the F-Line low-profile gives space without the height.
  • Touring as a family? Then the Imala or the new Adventure overcab offer more beds.
  • Want full luxury? For that, the Frontier and Grande Frontier are the top of the range.

Before you buy, check the weight against your licence. Also, read the insurance guide and Caravanning Costs before you budget.

Buying a Used Auto-Trail Motorhome

Used Auto-Trails are easy to find, and parts are widely available, so they’re a popular first motorhome. However, Practical Motorhome’s used buyer guides flag a few things to check.

Used Buyer's Checklist

  • Check the weight plate. Over 3,500 kg needs a C1 entitlement on your licence.
  • Ask for the cambelt history. Many owners change it within seven years.
  • On Fiat Ducato models, check the clutch for slip or a heavy pedal.
  • Ask for a written damp report from the last habitation service.
  • On older models, look for peeling bonnet paint and ageing appliances.
  • Check the MOT history online, and the tyre date codes.
  • Run a history check before you pay.

Where to See and Buy an Auto-Trail Motorhome

The best way to choose is to step inside and drive one. First, visit a local Auto-Trail dealer, where you can compare layouts and book a test drive. Then, if you can, go to the Motorhome and Caravan Show at the NEC in Birmingham. It runs each October, and most makers show their new models there.

When buying used, a dealer usually costs more than a private sale. However, you get legal rights under the Consumer Rights Act. Also, many dealers include a habitation check and a short warranty. In contrast, a private sale is cheaper, but the checks are down to you.

Whichever you choose, read Motorhome and Campervan Touring first, and keep the caravan checklists handy for collection day.
