UK Caravan Brands: Bailey, Swift, Coachman and Elddis

A simple guide to the main UK caravan brands. See who builds what, where each range sits, and what to check before you buy.

Choosing Between Caravan Brands

Four caravan brands account for most of the new and used tourers on UK sites. For example, they include Bailey of Bristol, Swift Group, Coachman and Elddis. Each one builds several ranges, from entry-level family tourers to luxury twin-axles.

For each brand, this page shows where it builds its caravans and its current ranges. It also covers construction, warranty cover and what to check on a used one.

Bailey of Bristol

First, Bailey has built caravans in Bristol since 1948, which makes it one of the oldest names in British touring. Today, it remains family owned and independent.

Next, the current line-up includes Discovery, Phoenix Black Edition and Pegasus Black Edition. At the top sits the Unicorn family, in Lite, Deluxe and Grande versions.

Bailey also builds with its own Alu-Tech construction. Its body shell integrity warranty needs a service every year, within six weeks either side of the purchase anniversary. So keep every stamp in the service book.

Swift Group

For the 2027 season, Sprite is the entry point for new caravanners. Challenger is the popular mid range, with ten layouts and two to six berths. Next comes Conqueror, then the flagship Elegance Grande.

Meanwhile, Swift builds with its SMART construction and offers a six-year warranty as standard. As with every brand, the warranty depends on a yearly service around the anniversary.

The 2027 range starts with Acadia, which Coachman calls affordable luxury. VIP is the best-selling range, while Laser and Lusso sit at the top.

Coachman also uses its own ABC bonded construction. In addition, its 2027 caravans come with a ten-year water ingress warranty as standard. As always, terms apply and it needs a yearly service.

Elddis and Buccaneer

Elddis built caravans in Consett, County Durham, from 1965. Its name is Siddle, the founding family, spelt backwards. Today, it is part of Erwin Hymer Group.

In 2026, caravan production at Consett ended, and Elddis is dropping the Buccaneer and Xplore names. However, it plans new caravans designed in the UK and built in Germany. The public launch is due in October 2027.

Even so, plenty of Elddis, Compass, Xplore and Buccaneer caravans remain on the used market. Their ten-year water ingress and body integrity warranty needs a yearly service at an approved dealer.

How to Choose Between Caravan Brands

Every brand builds a good caravan. So in practice, the right choice usually comes down to layout, weight and budget, not the badge.

  • Start with your car. Check its towing limits first, then shortlist caravans that suit it.
  • Pick the layout. Fixed bed, end washroom or bunks matter more than the brand.
  • Compare ranges, not just brands. An entry range from one maker can rival a mid range from another.
  • Check the warranty. Water ingress cover varies, and most needs a yearly service to stay valid.
  • Look inside at a show or dealer. Finish, storage and bed size are easier to judge in person.

Buying a Used Caravan from Any Brand

A used caravan can be great value, for example a few years old with warranty left. However, the same checks apply whatever the brand.

  • Ask for the full service history, with a stamp for every year.
  • Check whether any remaining warranty transfers to you. Some extended cover only applies to the first owner.
  • Run a CRiS check to confirm it isn’t stolen or still on finance.
  • Look for damp, soft walls and a spongy floor.
  • Check the tyre date codes, as caravan tyres age before they wear.
