We always enjoy heading into Shropshire with our caravan, and this trip was no different. There’s something about the quiet roads and rolling countryside that makes it easy to settle in.
For anyone who follows our UK campsite reviews, this area keeps giving us reasons to come back. In this Cartref Caravan and Camping Site review, we’re sharing our honest experience from a peaceful stay just outside Shrewsbury. We were looking for somewhere calm for a few nights, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like we had chosen well.
Cartref Caravan and Camping Site: The Welcome
The first thing that stood out was how well kept everything looked. The hedges were neatly trimmed. The fountain area gave the entrance some character. Everything felt looked after with real care. It gave us the sense that standards matter here.
Check-in was warm and easygoing, which is always a good start. The staff were friendly without overdoing it. They made us feel settled straight away. They talked us through the site. They also pointed out a few useful bits about the local area. It reminded us a little of our stay at Fields End Water Caravan Park. The welcome there also felt personal and relaxed rather than forced.
Since Cartref moved to adults-only, the atmosphere really leans into peace and quiet. Once we were through the gate, the whole place felt calm. We made our way to the pitch and got set up quickly. Before long, the kettle was on. Then came that familiar first-evening feeling of being away from home.
Pitch Quality
We were on a hardstanding pitch, and overall it was a good one. It was level, tidy, and easy to get sorted. We did not need any awkward manoeuvring. We also liked the hedges between pitches. They gave each space a bit of privacy. As a result, the site did not feel too open.
The only thing that held it back slightly was the size. We had enough room for our usual setup. Still, it felt a little tighter than we would have liked. It was fine rather than generous. A bit more space would have lifted it another notch.
There was also a road behind our pitch. It was not especially busy. We are not talking constant traffic noise. Even so, we did notice the occasional vehicle in the evening. It did not spoil the stay. However, it stopped the pitch feeling completely peaceful. Once we were settled in, it still worked well for us. It gave us a comfortable base for the trip.
Cartref Caravan and Camping Site: Facilities and Fun
The on-site bar ended up being one of the best parts of the stay. It had a cosy feel, especially with the log burner going. It also gave the site a more social side. Even then, it did not take away from the peaceful atmosphere. We spent some time in there with a drink. We chatted with other guests. It felt like a genuinely nice place to end the day.
We also tried the food from the Hungry Chef while we were there. It is always tempting when you do not fancy cooking back at the caravan. We went for the Sunday roast. The idea was great, but the meal was memorable for the wrong reason. The Yorkshire pudding arrived burnt. It instantly became one of those daft trip moments we knew we would keep talking about. It did take the shine off things a bit. That was a shame, because having food available on site is a real plus.
As for the main facilities, the toilets and showers were impressively clean throughout the stay. That side of things was hard to fault. The only downside was the shower block felt a bit dated. It did not quite match the rest of the site. Everything worked as it should. It was clearly well maintained. Still, it lacked the fresher feel we expected elsewhere on site.
Exploring Shrewsbury
One of the biggest advantages of staying at Cartref Caravan and Camping Site is how easy it is to get into Shrewsbury. We always enjoy places where you can mix a peaceful campsite stay with a proper wander around a town, and this worked really well for that. Shrewsbury has loads of character, with its black-and-white buildings, little passageways, independent shops, and plenty of spots to stop for a coffee.
We spent time walking through the Quarry Park and along the River Severn, and it made for the kind of easy day out that never feels rushed. If you enjoy a bit of history, there is plenty to keep you interested too, including Shrewsbury Castle and the Abbey. At the same time, the surrounding countryside gives you every excuse to slow things down and just enjoy being in this part of the country.
Back on site, it was nice to return to somewhere quiet at the end of the day. That adults-only setup really does shape the feel of the place, and it suited this trip perfectly. Final Verdict
Location:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Being so close to Shrewsbury made this an easy site to enjoy, with plenty to do nearby and a peaceful base to come back to afterwards.
Facilities:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The on-site bar added a lovely social touch and the facilities were very clean, but the dated shower block and our burnt Yorkshire pudding moment stopped it feeling quite as polished as it could have.
Cleanliness:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Everything across the site felt exceptionally well cared for, and that high standard was obvious from the minute we arrived.
Pitch Quality:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Our pitch was tidy, level, and practical, although the tighter space and occasional road noise kept it just short of top marks.
Value for Money:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
For a quiet adults-only break in a well-kept setting near one of our favourite Shropshire towns, this felt like good value overall.
