Shell Island Camping Site: Review

Camping area and coastal views at Shell Island Camping Site

Shell Island Camping Site: Introduction

Shell Island Camping Site is one of the most unique camping destinations in the UK. Covering around 350 acres of coastal land, it offers an experience that is very different from the modern touring parks that many caravanners and motorhome owners are familiar with.

It’s important to note that Shell Island does not allow caravans, making it a destination aimed at campers, motorhomes and those looking for a more traditional outdoor experience.

The site focuses on providing a back-to-basics camping holiday with spectacular coastal scenery, huge open spaces and direct access to some of the most beautiful beaches in North Wales.

Location

Shell Island’s location is undoubtedly one of its strongest features. Situated on the stunning Welsh coastline, the site offers breathtaking views and direct access to beautiful sandy beaches.

Whether you’re looking to relax by the sea, enjoy coastal walks or simply take in the scenery, the setting provides a fantastic backdrop for a camping holiday.

The surrounding area offers plenty to explore, and the coastal location helps make Shell Island a memorable destination.

Facilities

The site provides a reasonable range of facilities considering its size and back-to-basics approach.

There is a clubhouse, bar and café serving hot meals, along with a supermarket and camping shop that provide most of the essentials visitors may need during their stay.

However, while the facilities cover the basics well enough, they feel fairly basic when compared with many modern touring sites. Visitors expecting luxury facilities may be disappointed, but those embracing the traditional camping experience will likely find them perfectly adequate.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness across the site was generally acceptable during our visit.

Given the sheer size of the site and the large number of visitors it can accommodate, maintaining consistently high standards is a challenge. While we found cleanliness to be reasonable overall, it did not reach the standards of some of the higher-scoring sites we have reviewed.

The facilities were functional and usable, although there is room for improvement in presentation and attention to detail.

Pitch Quality

Pitch quality was one of the weaker aspects of our stay.

The site offers enormous open camping areas rather than clearly defined premium pitches, which will appeal to some visitors but may disappoint others looking for more structured touring facilities.

While the freedom to choose your own spot is part of Shell Island’s appeal, the pitches themselves are very basic and lack many of the features found on modern touring parks.

This is very much part of the site’s back-to-basics philosophy, but it inevitably impacts the overall score.

Value for Money

Despite some of its shortcomings, Shell Island offers good value for money.

The sheer size of the site, stunning coastal location and direct beach access help create an experience that is difficult to find elsewhere in the UK.

Visitors looking for a traditional camping adventure surrounded by nature may feel they receive excellent value from what is on offer.

Final Verdict

Shell Island is not a site that tries to compete with luxury touring parks, and in many ways that’s exactly what makes it special.

The breathtaking beaches, incredible views and huge open spaces create a camping experience that feels completely different from many modern sites. The clubhouse, bar, café, supermarket and camping shop provide useful facilities while still allowing the site to maintain its relaxed and traditional atmosphere.

However, visitors should arrive with the right expectations. The facilities are basic, the pitches are very simple and the overall experience is firmly rooted in traditional camping rather than luxury touring.

For those seeking a back-to-basics camping adventure with some of the best coastal scenery in the UK, Shell Island remains a destination well worth considering.
