There’s something special about a winter trip to the Peak District. The mist hangs in the dales, the hills glow at sunset, and the whole area feels calm after Christmas. Last December we hitched up our caravan and headed to Hartington Hills Caravan Park for a festive break packed with walks, caves, and very good food.
If you follow our trips, you’ll know we love a good base. Hartington is one of those lovely villages that looks picture-perfect in every season. We stayed from Boxing Day through to New Year, and it worked brilliantly as a base for the Derbyshire Dales. Once we settled onto our pitch, we knew we’d picked well.
Hartington Hills Caravan Park really impressed us. The site felt peaceful, tidy, and well looked after. It also gave us easy access to local walks while still feeling relaxing. The owners were friendly and helpful during our stay, which always matters over the festive period. The bathroom block stood out too, especially with underfloor heating on cold mornings. Add in wide countryside views and a handy spot just outside Hartington, and you’ve got a great place to stay in the Peak District.
Waking Up in the Hartington Hills
If you’ve stayed in this part of the Peak District before, you’ll know the scenery does most of the hard work. We’ve already shared more about waking up above the clouds in the Hartington Hills, and this visit gave us that same feeling again. Hartington itself is well worth a wander too, with its stone cottages, village atmosphere, and famous cheese shop.
We spent our first morning on the Dales of the River Dove walk. It starts in Hartington and quickly drops into Beresford Dale before carrying on into Wolfscote Dale. The route feels peaceful in winter, and the limestone scenery looks superb. The River Dove winds through the valley floor, and the cliffs rise above you for much of the walk. We also spotted a few birds moving along the crags, which always adds to the experience.
The path needs a bit of care in wet weather because the limestone gets slippery. Even so, the views make every careful step worth it. Pike Pool stood out for us, especially the limestone pillar rising straight from the water. Little details like that make this area memorable.
Into the Depths: The Blue John Mines
A stay at Hartington Hills Caravan Park puts you within easy reach of some of the Peak District’s best days out, and Blue John Cavern is one of them. Blue John is a rare mineral found in this part of Derbyshire, near Castleton, and it has a long history in the area.
We drove over for a visit and really enjoyed it. Heading underground always feels a bit surreal, especially after a crisp winter walk. The cool air hits you straight away, and the caverns feel dramatic from the first few steps.
The guided tour was excellent. We walked through narrow passages and larger chambers while looking at the mineral veins in the rock. The mix of purple, blue, and yellow colours really stands out under the lights. We also liked hearing how people mined it in the past and how it still gets carefully worked today for jewellery and ornaments. If you plan a visit, wear decent shoes and expect plenty of steps on the way back out.
A Sunday Feast at the Black Lion Inn, Butterton
After a day of caves and walking, we wanted a proper Sunday roast. We drove over to Butterton and booked a table at the Black Lion Inn.
Butterton is a lovely little village in its own right, and the ford along the main street gives it plenty of character. The Black Lion Inn felt exactly like the country pub we hoped for. It had stone walls, a warm fire, and a friendly atmosphere. We’d heard good things about the Sunday lunch, and it lived up to the hype.
The roast beef was excellent. It came out tender, pink, and generously sliced. The Yorkshire pudding was huge and perfect for catching the gravy. We also had honey-glazed carrots, braised cabbage, and crisp roast potatoes. It was proper comfort food after a cold day out.
The pub had a lively feel without being too busy or rushed. We could happily have stayed there all afternoon. If you want to go on a Sunday, book ahead because walkers and locals clearly know how good it is.
Family Ties and Caravan Flexibility
One of the main reasons we picked the Hartington area for this trip was to visit family nearby. This is where caravan travel really comes into its own. We had our own space, our own bed, and all the comforts we needed, while staying only a short drive away. Trips like this remind us why we enjoy using the caravan so much.
We spent a lovely afternoon catching up, talking through a few caravan upgrades, and planning future trips. That mix of freedom and comfort makes a real difference. Whether we’re crossing the Channel or heading somewhere closer to home, the flexibility is hard to beat.
Final Thoughts on Hartington
Our Christmas 2025 stay at Hartington Hills Caravan Park gave us exactly what we wanted from a winter break. We had a welcoming site, easy access to Hartington village, a brilliant walk through the Dales of the River Dove, an interesting trip to Blue John Cavern, and one of the best Sunday roasts of the trip at the Black Lion Inn in Butterton.
If you want a Peak District site with great views, good facilities, and plenty to do nearby, Hartington Hills Caravan Park is well worth a look. It suits walkers, food lovers, and anyone who enjoys having a peaceful base after a day out.
