Our latest trip took us into the heart of historic Essex. We packed up the caravan and headed toward Britain’s oldest recorded town for a short break. Finding a site so close to major attractions felt like a real win at first.
The Welcome
Upon arrival, the check-in process felt straightforward and efficient. The staff at the reception desk greeted us with a friendly smile. They provided a map of the site and explained the basic rules. However, the reception area shuts its doors promptly at 5 p.m. Therefore, you must plan your arrival time quite carefully. If you arrive late, you might find the process a bit more complicated.
We towed our caravan through the gates and followed the signs to our designated area. The site layout appeared simple enough to navigate without much stress. Furthermore, the entrance is wide enough for larger outfits to pass through comfortably. This ease of access definitely helps when you first arrive at a new location. You can see more photos of our various setups in our Gallery.
Colchester Country Park – Pitch Quality
Our pitch for this stay was a standard hardstanding spot. However, it felt very basic compared to other sites we have visited. We noticed that the pitches sit quite close to each other. Therefore, you might feel a lack of privacy during busier periods.
While the pitch served its purpose, it lacked a certain level of charm. We missed the spacious feel we enjoyed during our Riviera d’Azur review. On that trip, the private facilities really elevated the experience. In contrast, this site provides a much more functional and stripped-back environment.
Moreover, the lack of screening between pitches makes the site feel very open. You will definitely get to know your neighbours during your stay here. This layout might suit social campers who enjoy a communal atmosphere. However, those seeking a secluded retreat might find it a bit disappointing. Overall, the pitch quality is functional but certainly not luxurious.
The Facilities
The facility blocks at Colchester Country Park definitely show their age. While they remain functional, they are in desperate need of modernisation. We found the interior decor to be quite dated and tired. Furthermore, the lighting inside the blocks felt a bit dim during the evening. Nevertheless, the team works hard to keep everything operational for the guests.
One major point to note is the lack of onsite dining options. There is no bar or restaurant available within the park grounds. Consequently, you must bring your own supplies or drive into town for a meal. This lack of facilities makes the site feel more like a base than a destination. If you enjoy an evening drink at a site bar, you will be disappointed. Compare these amenities to our stay at Old Oaks Touring Park. Old Oaks felt much more premium, with luxury facilities that highlighted how dated the blocks feel here.
Additionally, the onsite shop only stocks the most basic essentials. You should definitely stock up on groceries before you arrive at the park. Fortunately, several large supermarkets sit just a short drive away from the entrance. Therefore, you can easily replenish your supplies whenever you need to. However, having a small cafe or bistro on site would vastly improve the guest experience.
Location and Local Area
The location of this park is arguably its biggest selling point. It sits perfectly for those wishing to explore the historic city of Colchester. You can reach the city centre in just a few minutes by car. Additionally, the famous Colchester Zoo is located very nearby. This makes the site a popular choice for families with young children.
However, this prime location comes with a significant drawback regarding noise. The site sits very close to the busy A133 road. Consequently, you can hear constant traffic noise throughout the day and night. This background hum might bother those who prefer a silent countryside retreat. Therefore, we recommend bringing earplugs if you are a light sleeper. The noise levels definitely impacted our overall relaxation during the trip.
Despite the road noise, the surrounding area offers plenty of activities. You can visit the Roman Circus Visitor Centre to learn about local history. Furthermore, the East Anglian Railway Museum provides a great day out for enthusiasts. Therefore, you will never find yourself short of things to do in Essex. Value for Money
We felt that the pricing was relatively fair for the location. However, the ageing facilities do bring the overall value down slightly. You are essentially paying for the convenience of being near Colchester. Consequently, if you don’t plan to explore the local area, the site feels overpriced. We have stayed at better-equipped sites for similar nightly rates in the past.
Nevertheless, the site remains a solid choice for a short functional stay. It provides everything you need for a comfortable night in your caravan. Just don’t expect the bells and whistles of a five-star resort. The cleanliness levels help to justify the cost to some extent. Moreover, the friendly staff make you feel welcome throughout your visit. Consequently, we would consider returning if we needed a base for the zoo again.
