Sandwich Lakes is a touring and fishing destination located within easy reach of the Kent coast. With several fishing lakes on site and convenient access to nearby coastal attractions, it has the potential to appeal to caravanners looking for a base from which to explore the area.
However, while there were some positives to our stay, we felt that several aspects of the site fell short of expectations, particularly when it came to the facilities, overall presentation and pitch quality.
Location
One of the site’s strongest points is its location. Situated within easy reach of the Kent coastline, Sandwich Lakes provides a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area and visiting nearby attractions.
Whether you’re planning coastal walks, visits to local towns or simply looking to enjoy the Kent countryside, the site is well positioned for getting out and about.
While the location is certainly an advantage, it wasn’t quite enough to offset some of the issues we experienced elsewhere on the site.
Facilities
The facilities were one of the weaker aspects of our stay.
While the site provides the basics needed for a touring break, the facilities felt fairly basic and often appeared muddy and dirty during our visit. This had a noticeable impact on the overall impression of the site and made the facilities feel less inviting than they could have been.
There is also a café on site, which initially appeared to be a welcome addition. Unfortunately, we found the food disappointing and well below the standard we had hoped for.
Overall, the facilities served their purpose but lacked the quality and presentation we have experienced at many other touring sites.
Cleanliness
Cleanliness across the site was average during our stay.
While the site was not neglected, we frequently found muddy conditions around the facilities, and the overall presentation lacked the attention to detail that helps create a premium touring experience.
There is certainly room for improvement in this area, particularly around maintaining cleaner communal areas during periods of wet weather.
Pitch Quality
The pitches were functional but very basic.
They provided enough space for a stay, but lacked the presentation, comfort and overall quality that many caravanners look for when choosing a touring site. Compared to some of the better sites we have reviewed, the pitches felt fairly uninspiring and offered little to elevate the experience.
While perfectly usable, they were not a standout feature of the site.
Value for Money
Sandwich Lakes offers reasonable value for money, although we felt the overall experience did not fully justify a higher score.
The convenient location and on-site fishing lakes add value for visitors who enjoy fishing or exploring the Kent coast. However, the basic pitches, disappointing café and below-average facilities limited the overall value we felt we received during our stay.
Final Verdict
Sandwich Lakes benefits from a convenient location and the addition of several on-site fishing lakes, which will undoubtedly appeal to some visitors.
However, we found the facilities basic and frequently muddy, the café food disappointing, and the pitches lacking the quality found at many competing sites. While the site provides a functional base for exploring the Kent coast, it never quite delivered the level of comfort or presentation we had hoped for.
There are positives here, particularly for anglers and those wanting easy access to the surrounding area, but improvements to the facilities, cleanliness and overall pitch quality would significantly enhance the experience.
